The Metzs learned volunteers would help them gut their home, but were happily surprised to find the volunteers modernized and restored it instead.

Burt and Jeanne Metz join “Early Start” this morning to discuss how their home renovations have impacted their lives.

“We need a lot of help because we're not in a condition to do the hard type of work that had to be done. And these people would come down and just did everything,” Burt Metz explains.

Four year old banned from pre-school for opting out of flu shot

Six states have made it mandatory for young children to get the vaccine in order to attend day care and pre-school. Alyssa and Joe Pereira refused to vaccinate their four year old son Jeremy because he is allergic to eggs and the vaccine contains traces of egg protein in it. He was banned from pre-school. New Jersey has since extended an exemption to opt out on these grounds just for this year. They stopped by to chat with Zoraida.

Statistics from the Center for Disease Control show 115 children dying from the flu from September 2010 to August 2011 that were not vaccinated. Jeremy’s parents still are not convinced that the shot has any effect, Joe says, “There is nothing definite about the shot working. I have never gotten the shot and never gotten the flu. I have plenty of friends who have gotten the shot with their kids and they get the flu, some of them almost immediately.”

Even though their son has severe allergic reactions to eggs, the Pereiras are confident their son will stay healthy during the flu season, Alyssa says, “He’s perfectly healthy except for a few allergies that he has, so that’s why we’re not so worried.”

Jessica Watts, cousin of Aurora shooting victim, boycotts theater opening: the invitation is 'almost unspeakable'

Five months after the tragic shooting massacre at a movie theater in Colorado, families of victims are outraged over a plan to reopen the theatre. Twelve people died and 58 people were injured when a gunman opened fire inside the Century 16 movie theater Aurora, Colorado on July 20 of last year. Cinemark, the owner, plans to reopen the theater in two weeks. The opening reception will feature a special "remembrance ceremony", followed by a movie screening. Families were invited but several family members are furious that such an event is happening in the first place. Jessica Watts is the cousin of Jonathan Blunk, a victim of the shooting at Aurora who died using his body to shield his girlfriend from the bullets. Watts is disgusted by the gesture.

She didn’t personally receive the invitation, which was forwarded from a victim’s assistance group to some of the families, but she read it. “It was very painful to read,” Watts says, “because there are twelve people, and one of those being my cousin, who absolutely paid the final ticket price with their lives.” She also says survivors have difficulty being anywhere near the theater. “It was almost unspeakable that they would give us this invitation, like it was a Hollywood premier.”

Her main issue with Cinemark is that they had never reached out to the victims before this “to offer sympathies, condolences or support,” she says. “And we have never had communication with them. But they went ahead and gave us this invitation.” She and eight other families have since written to Cinemark and decided to “boycott, not only the Aurora Cinemark, but all Cinemarks.”

Florida 4th graders rank #2 in worldwide reading test; FL Education Commissioner Pam Stewart says it was 'a concerted effort for a number of years'

Some very bright news comes from the Sunshine State this morning. Florida fourth graders rank among the best in the world in reading, according to the results of an international study released this week. The test, which was taken by students in 49 countries, has Florida's fourth grade students coming in second place, just two points behind Hong Kong, and 13 points above the U.S. national average for 2011. This is the first year Florida has participated in the study, which also measured math and science scores for fourth and eighth graders. Florida Education Commissioner Pam Stewart talks to Zoraida Sambolin about the surprising test scores on “Early Start” this morning.

Stewart responds to the accolade. "It's amazing. I think it's been a concerted effort for a number of years," she says. "Florida is focused on reading and cosidered every single teacher a reading teacher. We're very proud of the work that our students and teachers have done through this time."

Stewart explains the method behind the students' success and what a "reading teacher" means exactly. "All of our teachers, Kindergarten through 12th grade, no matter the subject they teach, incorporate reading skills and reading strategies within their course." She goes into the specifics, which include timed reading periods for students, at least 90 minutes per day, and extensive reading training sessions for teachers.

Florida's fourth and eighth graders scored closer to the U.S. average in math and science scores, meanwhile. Stewart says Florida's education system has already begun work to improve in those areas. "And we continue to do so, particularly as we move into the common core standards. There will be much more of an emphasis there. And we will see more improvement than we've already seen in Florida."
