Obama campaign ad with actress Lena Dunham compares voting to losing virginity

(CNN) – Conservatives seemed to collectively gasp Thursday night when a web video from President Barack Obama's campaign slyly compared a person's first time voting to losing one's virginity. This morning on "Early Start," Mark Preston on the controversy over an ad from actress Lena Dunham comparing voting for Obama to losing virginity.

The star of the video, Lena Dunham, created and stars in the HBO show "Girls." In the video, she appears in a close-up shot explaining the first time she voted.

"Your first time shouldn't be with just anybody," the actress and writer says. "You want to do it with a great guy."

The unspoken comparison continues, as Dunham describes what kind of "guy" she's talking about.

"It should be with a guy that really understands women," she says. "A guy who cares whether you get health insurance, specifically whether you get birth control. The consequences are huge. You want to do it with a guy who brought the troops out of Iraq. You don't want to do it with a guy who says, 'Hey I'm at the library studying,' when really he's out not signing the Lilly Ledbetter act."

At the end, the metaphor becomes even clearer: "My first time voting was amazing. There's a line in the sand. Before I was a girl, now I was a woman."

Dunham, whose show on HBO centers around her character's life as a young woman in New York City, doesn't shy away from risqué topics. In a taped opening at this year's Emmys, she was featured completely nude, eating a cake on a toilet. HBO, like CNN, is owned by Time Warner.

So.... CNN is just fine with equating voting to sex and encouraging girls to 'lose their virginity'. Why am I not surprised?

Her ad does not help Obama. What was she thinking? Also why is the ad endorsed by Obama? I think someone forgot to check with him.

I'm older and find this ad demeaning to women. On the other hand given Mr. Obama's agenda of late, wouldn't it have been more appropriate to have had a flaming male do the monolog she spoke?

Pathetic and desperate. Just shows how low Obama will stoop. Maybe he should just go ahead offer sex for votes.

This is exactly the type of person who should not be allowed to vote – the issues she's naming in this ad have ZERO to do with getting this country back on financial track and saving us from the abyss of debt accrued these last four years. Where is her outrage over 23 million plus out of work??? Why is that not an issue for her???? Then again, why does she have to worry about that??? She can continue creating series for HBO and make her millions regardless of who is in the WH. And "the guy" she's describing ... is she actually (in her less than cutesy way) equating first time sex and losing her virginity with voting for Obama???? This is the most sickening, obsequious, childish display of ignorance I've seen in quite some time. The mere fact that it is actually seeing air time is insulting and demeaning for all women and it's glib and overly sophmoric tone should be condemned by all people. I am in registered Independent woman and I am disgusted by this ad. It goes well over the top and does nothing to "endear" Mr. Obama to women. It's just another shameful example of taking the right to vote and reducing it to the most base terms. If she had any common sense, and that's highly doubtful after witnessing this debacle, Ms. Dunham would pull this ad but I'm sure it won't be. After all, it's all about being cool and looking at issues on the surface. Let's not tackle those big issues that will destroy this country eventually. That would be too tough. Grow up!!!
