I totally agree with Peter's assessment of Martha, and I also think she would have done a much better job than Jim Lehrer in the first presidential debate. She would have energized Obama!
Lehrer used to be a good moderator, but he has become too old for the job (a polite way of saying that he is senile).
Martha Raddatz had minimal control over that debate.. The interruptions were embarrassing.. Each candidate, which was 2 and not 3, is permitted an alloted time in which to respond and both candidates should be respectful of one another and allow the other to answer before giving his own response.. It was her responsibility to prevent the constant, rude interruptions, from happening..
Martha Raddatz cut off Ryan much more than she did Biden, yet Biden spoke longer. While it was subtle, what does that tell you?
Magnificent Martha moderated. She did what was expected of her. No more. No Less. Erickson is sore about an intelligent woman surpassing an incompetent old man. Get over it.
Raddatz was by far the best moderator to date. It's about time a moderator served the people, not the political agenda. She was forceful, precise and strong. I hope Candy will follow her lead.
I thought Martha did a terrible job. The candidates were debating Martha and not each other.
I watched the entire Vice Presidential Debate, difficult and gut-wrenching as it was. Martha Raddatz, appeared biased to me and, shockingly, managed to successfully cut off and interrupt Paul Ryan repeatedly. She did not at all, in my opinion, have control of this debate and appeared completely unqualified and high-strung throughout. Paul Ryan, to his credit, was respectful, and, more importantly, naturally presidential in the manner that he carried himself. Joe Biden acted like a pompous first class jerk that inhibited the natural flow of exchanges and thwarted our ability to grasp ideas that were being shared. Joe Biden needs – has needed anger management counseling. Give Paul Ryan credit for his mastery of foreign policy affairs. Heaven forbid if Joe Biden ever had to step in temporarily to act as Commander In Chief...
She should have stopped the interruptions so that we can hear what the candidates were saying . When a candidate is given 90 seconds, the interruption will take away the time. She should have been strong and put an end into all that stupidity that took away from the substance. It was like seeing kids. my children behave better than that and can not get away with what went on in that debate. I could not believe my eyes. She should have given a warning and control that situation. My 14 years old was amazed as he watched what took place. How do we expect our children learn and behave better when the VP of our country acts like that.My son was asking me if Mr. Biden had some kind of disorder or psychological problem!!!
If she had not of interrupted Ryan so much, I'd of said she did ok. However, her partisan streak was evident by her leading questions to Biden and her interruptions to Ryan preventing him from completing answers to questions really disappointed me.
Clinton bowed down because he was parodying Obama's bow at the hip to the Saudi King.
Martha Raddatz was not impressive – she was jumping all over the place.
She starts with foreign policy then jumps to Medicare then the budget then the military then foreign policy and then abortion.
There was no flow to the questions being asked – often times segueing to an entirely different topic literally in mid-sentence.
Also almost completely ignored the economy – which is the number 1 issue.
Let's see, she visited Biden at his home earlier in the year, invited Obama to her wedding twice...its not a surprise that she allowed Biden to get away with being an absolute jerk and distracting the audience from listening to Ryan's answer's. I wonder if Joe would give more than about $100/yr to charity if he didn't spend so much on botox, hairplugs, and fake teeth. She did a pretty good job keeping things moving along but her bias did come through.
She is not qualify moderate the debate. She even not qualify to be a journalist. she is too bias.
not only did she let Biden interrupt the entire time but she did a fair share of her own interrupting
I was shocked to see such a one sided "moderator" – only Dems could have thought that was a fair job!
I noticed that with Jim Lehrer, Mitt somehow almost always got the last word. For Erickson to say he thought Lehrer did a better job at moderating is a clear display of his bias toward anything that helps Republicans, or hurts Democrats.
I was driving home and turned on CSPAN to listn to the debate. I heard Ms. Raddatz ask questions in an incredibly leading way and was horrified that this was the debate and the moderator. Moreover her voice was very emotional and whiny. It was awful and unprofessional. I can't believe how many people are praising the job she did.
I felt Martha favored the Democratic candidate through the following observations:
1 She favored follow up questions with Mr. Ryan vs. Mr. Biden (She challenged Ryan asking if he would present a plan as if she was debating him.)
2 She did not manage the time equally, our V.P. was given greater time to respond.
3 She did not act as a moderator and control interruptions, and balance of rebuttals
On a side note, when will there a balance of questioning and debates be hosted by Republican leaning individuals?
You talk about VP Biden the way he acted at the debate with Ryan. But, was it fair for Romney to bring a cheat sheet to the debate with Pres. Obama?
She was as annoying as Biden. Erickson is correct.
As a personal friend of OBAMA, and OBAMA attending her wedding, pretty much shows they are close friends etc., seems to be an enormous breach of conflict for Martha Raddatz to be the moderator--I know it doesn't matter for criminals to help other criminals--the days of honor, arm's length, keep things honest and above board are gone-well unless America wake's up and wants to retain their freedoms and good life.
I believe Martha did a wonderful job as moderator. She asked pointed questions and returned to the point when not addressed by the candidates. I hope she get nominated for some award for doing the job the way is should be done.
Soledad's opinion is very useful; whatever she believes I choose the opposite. As for Martha Raddatz, she should stick to field reporting, which she's very good at. She's about as irritating and unlikeable as they come within that debate format.
I felt she did a poor moderating job. She came across intimidated by Biden and she tried to be firm with Ryan. She as a facilitator should have taken more control of the interruptions. I am a facilitator for a big company and we have to keep it on track. She did NOT impress me. She came across weak!
Anderson Cooper is my vote.
Martha Raddatz was fantastic. We give her a 10out of 10
I don't know what Debate Erickson was watching.
Martha Raddatz is one of the smartest, bravest, best reporters and interviewers we have ever had. She did an incredible job.
I agree with Peter. The issues, direct and follow-up questions were incisive. She was equally forthright with both participants. Not all issues were covered (major missing one being immigration). But I certainly could have continue to watch for quite a while longer.
Raddatz and Biden were off their meds that nite. Their keepers need to pay more attention to that.
Erickson has done more to harm his own credibility than he has harmed Raddatz. I wish every moderator was as fair and balanced as was Raddatz. Erickson may need a vacation from commenting because he is clearly not thinking clearly.
She was the biased and rude moderator I have ever seen. Since when is a moderator of a debate supposed to become INVOLVED with the arguments?? Completely unprofessional behavior but then she hosted the president at her wedding so what could you expect....
I appreciated her moderator skills, but not always her questions which, I believe, somewhat highlighted her concerns more than the most expressed concerns of American voters. And, I did not like her last question as I do not believe that candidtes' religion is appropriate for questions.
I agree with Erickson, Raddatz was horrible; she lost control of the debate. No moderator should allow a debater to interrupt like Biden did. Biden was rude, sarcastic, out of control and many of his statements were inaccurate, which shows us what kind of President he would be if needed. Ryan on the other hand kept his composure and answered the questions like a VP should. Biden also used up some of Ryan's time with his interruptions and Raddatz did nothing. The group watching the debate at my house was disapointed and as annoyed as I was.
Martha's questioning was excellent. However, there has to be some rules of the road so to speak regarding the conduct of the speakers. Joe Biden's interruptions and speaking over his opponent crossed over a line. The Moderator should have called him on his rude and distracting behavior which only the most partisan of viewers could excuse..
raddatz clearly showed who she works for...
she was biased, interuppted ryan far more often than she did biden, she never admonished biden for butting in, never asked him to respect ryans speaking time, she asked off topic questions like abortion, which really had nothing to do with the debate subject, namely the economy and foreign policy. she asked nothing about the debt, nothing about the housing crisis...in short, she tried to steer clear of anything that could be difficult for the democrats.
I really thought raddatz came off as very skeptical of ryan and very forgiving of biden...and that to me, is not a MODERATOR.
i thought martha did very well.she kept the debate going and kept the speaking time very close.she did much better than jim leir.why did no one comment about his performance?
While Martha was more forceful than Jim Leher....she certainly did not stop Joe Biden from interrupting Paul Ryan more than 50 times. In school, interrupting is NOT allowed in debate. That is why it is called a debate. It is suppose to follow rules. As I watched Joe Bidden's performance, I was more embarrassed that I voted for the Obama/Biden ticket. I will not vote for this team again. And I vote Stephanie Cutter as the MOST hateful woman in America. I doubt that I will ever return to the Democratic party. They now seem like the Republicans of the 70's!!!!
All the moderators I have seen, with the exception of the guy who Newt chewed out, have done a terrific job. I have always thought Jim Leher was exceptional.
Martha Raddatz has been the best moderator to run a presidential debate! Finally someone who is going to get answers and not let the debaters off the hook................Well done Martha!
Ms. Raddatz did an awful job of being even handed. She was good at press Ryan for specifics on the Romney plan and then gave Biden a chance to respond. She did NOT press Biden for specifics on the Obama plan going forward so Ryan had no opportunity to respond to specifics of the Obama 2012-2016 plan.
She chided Biden-Obama for their Libya response, which was NOT her place. She chided Romney-Ryan on their tax plans, which was not her place.
Her job was to ask questions that 1) brought out the plans and goals of each campaign and 2) gave each camp a chance to respond to the other's plans.
Instead, America knows the Obama-Biden response to the Romney-Ryan plan but America was left TOTALLY uninformed of specifics of the Obama -Biden plan.
Ms. Raddatz earned a C- for a lopsided, incomplete performance.
She was professional and they seemed to respect her more than the candidates did to Jim Leherer. But it didn't feel like a debate at all. Debaters are only supposed to interrupt if people are going over on time. They usually don't involve probing questions and follow ups. It felt too much like a dual interview. That and the fact that she allowed Biden to interrupt constantly and never stopped him. That's not being a moderator. As in to moderate. In this aspect you failed miserably.
Raddatz did an extremely prejudicial job of "moderating". She appeared to be intimidated by "Fog Horn Leg Horn" Biden while all too willing to reverse that effect by asking Ryan several questions not asked of the blow hard, along with cutting Ryan off on several occasions.
Soledad is right on target. He is out of his mind. Martha Raddatz did what Jim Lehrer should have.
Martha Raddatz was terrible! Can't stand her!
Obviously Peter, you didn't realize not only did Biden interrupt Ryan 82 times. Raddatz interrupted Ryan more than Biden. I guess having Obama come to your wedding might have a little something to do with it.
Martha Raddatz was the best! Excellent moderating skills. Good job!
Soundoff is certainly an Obama fan, i.e. a liberal and very subjective. Martha Raddatz was awful. She was bias, take just one side, Biden’s. She interrupted Ryan zillion times. Shame on her. The worst moderator for 20 years!
She was horrible for a variety of reasons.
Martha did not ask questions about: 1) Energy policy; 2) Education policy, and 3) Immigration. Two of these topics are major planks in each campaign and the third, immigration, is a long way from being solved. They all poll as major issues important to voters. How can anyone say Martha did well since she did not even bring up these issues? Just think of all the sub-issues that derive from these topics, oil, oil drilling, clean energy, gas prices, coal, student loan debt, sky rocketing tuition costs, the War on our Southern Border, etc. So for omitting these topics the best grade she can get is a D. Worse, the discussion of our economy was superficial and did not even scratch the surface...we didn't learn anything from the candidates that was not in their campaign commercials. The tax question she asked was silly. The candidates wasting time on the home mortgage deduction demonstrated Martha's ignorance about how many people even use it as a deduction–clearly she did not know. The Fed is buying 61 percent of U.S. debt–absolutely unprecedented, yet no question about it. The Senate has not passed a budget in at least three years–no question about that. President Obama was caught off-mic requesting a message get passed to Putin stating he'd have more flexibility after the election–no question about he meant. Clearly this is a foreign policy issue...Martha's a foreign policy correspondent...why no question on it? But she did ask about abortion. An issue that just appeared out of the blue...no one has been talking about it and it has not been a campaign issue. Why didn't she ask about affirmative action? This is at least before the Supreme Court. Why didn't she ask about voter fraud, voter suppression...all issues in the courts right now. Banks no longer have to mark their assets to market due to an FASB accounting rule change...does this help the transparency of our system. President Clinton's repeal of Glass-Steagle is still in effect. This was a major cause of the speculation in housing. President Obama's hand-picked TARP administrator said nothing's changed with respect to all the mechanisms that caused the Great Recession. It'd be nice to hear a moderator state his claims to the candidates and get their reactions. How can anyone say Martha even did good? Clearly, just saying let's move on to the next topic is their only standard.
If anyone thinks allowing someone to interrupt over 80 times did a good job then they must be biased.
What a pin head this guy is.
Give him his waling papers CNN. This guy is a Faux news plant.
"walking", not waling. Sorry.
Martha Raddatz consistently permitted Biden to interrupt Ryan, and when Ryan tried to use his own time to rebut, peppered Ryan with questions, thus preventing him from answer Biden's points. She never or rarely challenged Biden. In this way, she was completely biased against Ryan. Her own positive contribution was that she asked excellent questions. I give her a D-.
Martha did what she was supposed to do. Nobody believes she is impartial. Her job was to minimize the damage Biden could do to himself and the Dem party and keep Ryan from running roughshod. Mission Accomplished. Totally expected. Anyone with an open mind can go back and check the stats of the debate and see just how "impartial" Radditz was. That said – as a conservative – this is to be expected, if we don't like it – tough. There are no impartial "news" people out there as far as I can tell. Should just let everyone know going in that it is a 2-1 situation and make the best of it.
martha was a bad moderator, as she kept interjecting herself when they were answering. she obviously submitted to pressure from the liberals that she be more proactive in helping her candidate..
also, some of the questions were idiotic-like the personality questions and the "you are both catholic" questions.
not good at all.
Clearly, she is an Obama fan. I thought her handling of Joe Biden’is interruptions and his snickering during the entire debate were unprofessional.. She NEVER set boundaries with him and it was a farce. A journalist SHOULD be impartial. This was a case of bias and sickening. As an Independent, I ask myself, is THIS who I would like representing my country should he have to take over the Presidency….one wonders!!!!
SHE HERDED THOSE BIG EGO CATS LIKE THE BEST TAMER RINGLING BROS. EVER HAD – A JOY TO WATCH AND HEAR.
I think Martha Raddatz was terrific. I like the way she would break in on the rambling of the candidate and ask for specifics. That is so much better than letting them ramble on and on with lie after lie. She is thus far the best Moderator I have seen yet. Way to go Martha.
Martha Raddatz was horrible .. she give Biden more time that Ryan, she did not interrupt Joe "the BrainLess" biden when he was interrupt Ryan from speaking ... she was only questioning Ryan of specifics and let Joe Biden just blab his mouth ueslessly. Joe Biden was Rude .. his mother and father may have taught him alot but no manners or disipline ..
Martha Raddataz was obviously biased. Her questioning favored the man who attended her wedding and hired her husband.... She's a family friend of the Obamas! We might as well have had Michelle Obama moderating the debate.
Hmmm, wonder why she "cut off" Ryan just when he was responding to laughing Joe. She wouldn't let him finish and TOTALY changed the subject on him twice in the middle of his answer.Looks like she was trying to save the out of control Joe from needing to respond as Ryan was questioning him. This debate meant nothing in the end and made Raddatz look as bias as MSNBC.
