Douglas wins women's all-around gold & Phelps nabs his 16th gold medal- Amanda Davies reports

Sixteen-year-old American gymnast Gabby Douglas became the third straight American and the first African-American to win the women's all-around gold medal last night in London.

Beginning with a stellar vault and ending with a dazzling floor routine, Douglas cemented her legacy and completed her meteoric rise from unfocused teen to Olympic champion.

Swimmer Michael Phelps also avenged his earlier loss to fellow American Ryan Lochte, winning his 16th gold medal in the 200-meter individual medley.

CNN's Amanda Davies discusses these big wins on Early Start this morning and explains what's coming up in the Olympics over the weekend.

MYB: July jobs report preview

U.S. stock futures and European markets are up ahead of the July jobs report, set to be released by the Labor Department this morning at 8:30am ET.

Economists surveyed by CNN are predicting the economy added 95,000 jobs last month.

That's only a slight improvement over the 80,000 jobs added in June, and is not strong enough to keep up with population growth, let alone reduce the unemployment rate from its current 8.2%.

Christine Romans breaks down the predicted figures on Early Start this morning and explains how the numbers will influence the November election.

Were red flags on James Holmes ignored? Attorney Joey Jackson on the legal implications

(CNN) - The psychiatrist treating the accused Colorado movie theater gunman was so concerned about his behavior that she mentioned it to her colleagues, saying he could potentially be a danger to others, CNN affiliate KMGH reported Wednesday, citing sources with knowledge of the investigation.

The psychiatrist's concerns surfaced in early June, nearly six weeks before the July 20 killings inside a movie theater in Aurora, sources told the Denver station. Twelve people were killed and 58 wounded when the gunman opened fire during a screening of the new Batman film. James Holmes, 24, was charged Monday with murder and attempted murder in the case; he also faces two weapons charges.

This morning on "Early Start," criminal defense attorney Joey Jackson discusses the legal implications of the report.
