America's front yard getting a makeover

More than 25 million people visit the National Mall each year, and half of all Americans will visit in their lifetime. It's been 36 years since the Mall's last major renovation,  but visitors may begin to notice changes to the park.

The National Mall Design Competition announced the winning plans in the contest to revamp three areas of America's back yard yesterday: Union Square, the Washington Monument grounds at Sylvan Theater and Constitution Gardens.

The Trust for the National Mall is planning to raise $350 million in private funds over seven years to help support the project, which will cost $700 million total.

On Early Start this morning, the president of the Trust for the National Mall Caroline Cunningham shares the Mall's renovation plans and explains when she expects the project to be completed.
